I usually don’t highlight any particular artist from the sessions, but this week I felt compelled to feature Ken. We refer to him as “The Late Ken Mickelsen” because he always comes to the session between 10 and11. Yet he often is more productive than anyone. Sunday was no exception and he quickly got down the figure with such life and gesture that we all were jealous and inspired. Good work, Ken.
Unprecedented Brilliance
7 10 2007OK, so I’m not going to claim or deny briliance on this post. I’ll leave that to the viewer. I did however, want to tell those that don’t draw with us about a tradition we have in the studio. It started at Denny Doran’s sessions years ago. He’d often end the final session of a pose by saying ” We have 20 more minutes. So if you are going to do anything of unprecedented brilliance, you better start now.” Time pressure does help you focus. Often you do more in the last hour than the first several if you don’t maintain a proper pace. So a timer, a setting sun, or an upcoming gallery opening can be a great motivator to get serious and crank out some work. Maybe even the occassional brilliance.
Today we had Chris Yount, Ken Mickelson, and Steve Armes with Aralyn finishing the pose we started last week. I decided not to finish my painting from last week and went to charcoals instead. I’m glad I did, as I like the way this piece turned out, especially with the way the light falls on her face. The title of this piece is “Model Amused by Clever Artist’s Funny Jokes”.

I Sprang Out of Bed
1 10 2007right at 8:15, excited to be having the Sunday sessions again. The turnout was light, as it was John Kuehne, Chris Yount, Aralyn (modeling) and me. However, the session was just the right mix of silence and interaction. Chris told us how much she had missed the life drawing, and John expressed it with becoming a ‘wild beast’ with his color. It was great to get the studio cranked up again.
